Udder Hygiene
Udder hygiene is of critical importance to deliver a high quality milk product. We have to consider the outside as well as the inside of the udder. The outside of the udder needs to be clean with short hair. The teats need to be flexible and the teat ends have to be healthy. The inside of the udder needs to be free of bacteria and viruses. To accomplish a good udder hygiene in the herd, it is very important to adhere to a strict protocol of cleaning in the milking parlor without cross contamination between cows. A clean and good working milking machine is also very important. Check the teat ends after milking of color and form. Pre and post dip will help to keep bactery growth in check. An antibiotic applied in the dry period with a teat sealer will help the udder to rejuvinate and be ready for the next lactation. To keep an eye on the bactery levels, it is possible to check the milk with the California test or the Porta check mastitis test. Conductivity is an indicator of high cell count. A higher than normal temperature of the milk can also indicate sub clinical mastitis. A combination of conductivity and teperature measurement on our milk yield indicators with a warning list in the milk point controller can help you find infected cows.
