Electronic identification by RFID ear tags is a cost effective way of identifying individual cows, because its information is used in the milking parlor to register milk yield, apply individual feeding, and administer herd management.  The electronic ear tag is applied the same way as a traditional ear tag, where the female part is the electronic disc.

When the cow shows up at the milking parlor, feeding station, or sort gate, the curtain antenna picks up the signal from the tag and sends it to the MPC.  The MPC signals to the milk reader, the feeding station, or the sort gate which action to take for that cow.  In the case of the milk reader, the information gathered about the cow during milking is sent back to the MPC.
